Step into my garden

A beautiful garden is a work of art. But it also depends on the laws of nature and should not only be attractive but also serve the practical needs of the owner.

The layout of the garden should be logical. Every thing in the garden should create a natural look and not a forced one. The garden design should assure pleasingly attractive results.

Principle

A Rock garden is best placed on a slope and not on level ground. Plants that grow in dry location should not be planted beside a pool . A garden is a place for a lilac bush and not poplar tree. In a garden, shapes should be clean and definite. Oval and circles are suitable for flower beds. Every garden needs a dominating feature that sets a tone and gives it a character.

It would be wrong to put a brightly-coloured flower bed with pieces of modern sculpture. Harmony could be achieved by using elements and placing them randomly in an attractive arrangement. Contrast can be achieved by placing two elements next to each other that are markedly different in form and colour. When designing a garden, the effect of light and shade should be taken into account.

A green lawn

Plants to choose

Conifers are most rewarding and require very little maintenance. They usually dominate the garden.

A green lawn is costly to maintain and requires regular watering and fertilizing .The bald patches must be sown with new seeds.

Roses also entail more work and are time consuming. No plant can match their wide range of shapes, colours and scent. Rhododendron, deciduous azalea, heathers also forms a good collection .

Planting position in the garden

The bottom layer
The bottom layer composes of flowers which brighten the garden. These are mostly rock garden plants, bulbs, water and bog plants.

Middle layer
It should consist of the loveliest flowers which can also be used for cutting, like roses, perennials, tulips, gladioli, dahlias, climbing plants etc. These should be planted in a well-defined bed.

Top layer
It is composed of ornamental shrubs and trees. It is the main structural element. As full-grown trees are difficult to move, their growth rate and final size should be kept in mind while planting.

Boundary

A defined boundary is usually a necessity, without which even the best of gardens look unfinished. Hedges, wooden fences, wire fences and iron railings or brick walls may be used.

Furniture & Ornaments

Furniture & Ornaments

Garden furniture should blend with the garden. Attractive decorative objects of wood, stone and clay should be placed in an open space such as lawn, edge of a pool and paved patio or beside the steps.

Screens

Pergolas, archways and screens are enhanced by climbing plants. Archways and pergolas cannot be placed in isolation .An archwas can decorate an entrance or may lead to the kitchen garden.

Pool

A pool can enhance the beauty of a garden and can also serve as a reservoir of water. The spot for it should be chosen with care. Its shape ,size and depth should be thought out in advance.

Soil Culture

The ideal soil for growing the widest range of garden plants should have combined advantages of sandy and clay soils and should contain plenty of organic matter. Soil can vary in its characteristics even between different parts of the same garden. First find out what type of soil is required for the plants. Then do a soil test. Take a handful of soil, squeeze it tightly and then release it. If it retains its shape, some clay is present. If you can mould it and it feels smooth, it contains a lot of clay. If it crumbles, it is a mixture of clay and sand. Very sandy soil will simply slip through your fingers. Healthy soil depends on adequate supplies of organic matter. For making manure, most garden plant residues and kitchen waste can be used.

Climate,Water & Sunlight

Climate

It is the weather and soil together that controls the growth of plants. Plants depend for their survival on temperature, rainfall and duration of exposure to sunlight. Both excessive heat and excessive cold can harm plants.

Water

One of the most important things that must be kept in balance in a plant is the intake of water by roots. This balance is affected by the amount of water in both soil and air, by air and soil temperature, by exposure to sunlight and wind and the efficiency of the root system. Water is held more tightly by clay soil than sandy ones. For newly planted plants, a daily sprinkle of water is enough .Too much water can have adverse effect of washing valuable plant food away.

Sunlight

Sunlight is important for the growth of plants but excessive light is harmful. So during summers, the plants should get light indirectly and not directly. In summers, days are longer, so plants should be kept under a shade or green house.

Pests & pots

Pests

Every garden should be protected against plant pests, diseases and disorders. Pesticides are available both in liquid and powdered form. The choice of the kind of pesticide to use should be made carefully. Pesticide should always be used in its diluted form.

Pots

Plants can be grown in pots also .Arranging these pots or containers in different ways gives the look of an ideal small garden. In places where space is a problem, one can grow plants in containers of different shapes and sizes.
